before long，long before的用法及区别

这一对词的词序相反，含义大不一样。

before long的意思是“不久”、“不久之后”；before是介词，long是名词。long before的意思是“很久以前”；long是副词，before是介词或连词。

Class will be over before long.很快就要下课了。

I wish to see you again in the United States before long.我希望不久之后在美国能再看到你。

They all got to the place of assembly long before the time.他们都在约定的时间很早之前就到了集合地点。

I had heard about this tea garden long before I saw it.在看到它很久之前我就听说过这座茶园了。

请注意，在某些情况下，long和before并不是词组，它们之间并没有联系，long是形容词，不是副词；before是连词；不是介词，因为其后接从句，例如：

It will not be long before they come back to Hong Kong.

在英语里，与before long和long before类似区别的词组尚有only if和if only。请看下面的例句：

I shall do better only if I have another chance.我将会做得更好一些，但必须再给我一次机会。

I shall do better if only I have another chance.我将会做得更好一些，只要我再有一次机会。

有趣的是，在某些场合下，if和only还可以拆开使用。例：

He will succeed if he only does his best.他只要努力而为，是会成功的。

相反，有些短语在词序颠倒后，意义并不改变。例如：

He spent a half day on his homework.

=He spent half a day on his homework.

I dreamed about it day and night.

= I dreamed about it night and day.
