except，excepting的用法及区别

这两个词都可用作介词，又都表示“除……之外”的含义，但使用场合并不相同。

（一）用作介词时，except之后可以接名词、代名词、介词、 副词和从句；excepting在现代英语里，只用在not，always，without的后面（见下列例句）。

（二）除介词和连词外，except还可用作动词。例：All of them will be severely punished；I will except no one．我要将他们全都严惩，一个也不饶。

I have visited all the colleges and universities in Hong Kong except Baptist University.（后面跟名词）除浸会大学外，其他香港的大学我都去访问过。

All went except him.（后面跟代词）除他之外，其他的人都去了。

She has been in good health except in the last few days.（后面跟介词）除了最近几天之外，她的身体一直很好。

She has been in good health except quite recently.（后面跟副词）除了最近之外，她的身体一直很好。Except that she speaks a bit too fast，she is an excellent teacher.（后面跟从句）除了说话快了一点之外，她是一名极好的教师。

Everybody should observe the rules not excepting（or without excepting even）the principal.每个人都应遵守规则，校长也不例外。

All of us come here every day，always excepting him.除了他经常不来之外，我们每天都到这里来的。

except作连接词时，表示“unless”之意，但它只用在古英语里。例：Except the Lord build the house，their labour is vain that build it.

因此，下列句中的except应改用unless为宜：

I cannot perform the task except（应改为unless）you lend me a hand.除非你帮忙，否则我干不了此事。

请注意，except不能用not修饰，如用not，就要改用excepting。例：

All were there，not excepting（不用not except）Mary.

except用在动词do之后，其后接不带to的动词原形。例如：

All day long she did nothing except sob.
